Combine a glacier hike with a visit to a stunning blue ice cave in this great-value adventure. It's the closest meeting point to the ice, with expert guides, free parking, and hot drinks included.
Step into a frozen world of blue ice and breathtaking landscapes on this glacier hike and ice cave adventure near Skaftafell Nature Reserve, located in the heart of Vatnajökull National Park. Led by one of our certified glacier guides, this small-group tour takes you onto Falljökull, a dramatic outlet glacier of Europe’s largest ice cap, and into a naturally formed blue ice cave that few get to experience up close.
Your adventure begins at the Troll cozy glacier base in Hof, just a few minutes’ drive from the glacier and closer than any other operator’s meeting point. Here, you can park for free (no need to pay Skaftafell parking fees), use the on-site restrooms, and get fitted with all your glacier gear indoors, including crampons, harness, helmet, and ice axe. You can also rent sturdy hiking boots if needed, and warm up with a complimentary coffee or hot chocolate before you head out.
After a short ride, you’ll take a scenic 20-minute walk to the edge of the glacier, passing meltwater streams and the marks of the glacier’s retreat carved into the bedrock. You will then gear up and your guide will explain how the ice has shaped the landscape over centuries, and continues to do so today.
Once you step onto the glacier, you’ll learn how to walk safely on the ice, before setting off to explore its stunning formations: deep blue crevasses, ice ridges, and towering moulins (vertical shafts formed by meltwater).
The highlight of the tour is entering a naturally formed ice cave, glowing in surreal shades of blue. Inside, the light plays through crystal-clear walls of ancient ice, creating an unforgettable atmosphere. Your guide will share how these caves form, and why they change from year to year as the glacier slowly moves and melts.
The entire glacier hike and ice cave visit lasts about 1.5 hours, with plenty of time for photos and for your guide to share insights about the glacier’s formation, movement, and future.
Back at the base, you’ll be greeted with another round of hot drinks and a candy bar, the perfect reward after your adventure.
This tour is designed for anyone in good health with a sense of adventure. No prior experience is needed — just warm clothing, sturdy shoes, and curiosity about Iceland’s most awe-inspiring natural wonder.
